DPF Cleaning

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a key part of a modern diesel exhaust system, designed to capture and store soot produced during combustion to reduce harmful emissions. Over time, the filter can become restricted with soot and ash, particularly on vehicles that mainly do short journeys or rarely reach full operating temperature. When this happens, the DPF can’t regenerate properly, leading to warning lights, poor performance, increased fuel consumption, and eventually limp mode if the blockage becomes severe.

To resolve this, we use a Launch DPF gun with specialist solutions to remove soot and ash build-up safely and effectively. The fluid is applied directly into the DPF under controlled pressure, dissolving carbon deposits and clearing the passageways within the filter. This restores exhaust flow and allows the regeneration process to function as intended, without removing or damaging the filter itself.

A proper clean not only restores performance and fuel economy but also helps prevent related issues with pressure sensors, EGR valves, and turbos. If you’ve got a DPF warning light or your diesel is struggling for power, it’s best to get it checked early. In most cases, cleaning the filter can prevent the need for an expensive replacement.

Signs of a Blocked DPF

You don’t always need a warning light to know the filter’s starting to block up.

Common signs include:

  • Loss of power or sluggish acceleration

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Engine running hotter than normal

  • A strong exhaust smell or more visible smoke

  • DPF or engine management warning lights

  • Vehicle going into limp mode

If any of these symptoms appear, it’s best to get it checked before the blockage gets worse. Early cleaning is far cheaper and more effective than a replacement filter.

What Causes DPF Blockages?

Short journeys and stop–start driving are the main causes of DPF blockages. The system needs to reach full operating temperature to burn off soot during regeneration, which doesn’t happen if the car’s only used for short runs. Faulty sensors, EGR or injector problems, and poor-quality fuel can also lead to excess soot build-up. Over time, this restricts exhaust flow and affects performance.

How to prevent Future Blockages

A professional clean removes soot and ash build-up and restores proper exhaust flow so the system can regenerate as intended. Keeping up with regular servicing, using the correct low-ash engine oil, filling up with good-quality diesel, and giving the vehicle a proper run at operating temperature every so often all help prevent blockages from coming back.
